BALTIMORE — A Baltimore police officer acquitted in the death of a black man who suffered a broken neck in a police van is set to receive nearly $127,000 in back pay.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the city’s Board of Estimates is scheduled to authorize the payment to Lt. Brian Rice, who was acquitted last month of manslaughter, misconduct and other charges in Freddie Gray’s 2015 death, which sparked weeks of protests and two nights of rioting.
Rice and three other officers charged with felonies after Gray’s death were suspended without pay. Now that they’ve been cleared, they’re entitled to back pay under department policy. Rice faces an administrative review.
Last month, the spending panel authorized $88,000 in back pay for Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., the van driver.
