MERIDIAN, Idaho — Police in a Boise suburb arrested a man Thursday after they say he went on a 90-minute rampage through a downtown neighborhood, punching a teen, kicking a dog, beating a construction worker with a shovel and tipping over a man in a wheelchair.
Sean Carnell, 23, is charged with kidnapping, two battery counts, robbery, burglary and animal cruelty after the apparently drug-fueled crime spree in Meridian. His bail was set at $1 million, and he was to be appointed a public defender.
Prosecutors allege Carnell punched a 15-year-old boy in the face and stole his skateboard at about 9:30 a.m. Shortly after that, he is suspected of yelling at a 10-year-old boy and kicking his dog.
Charging documents say Carnell then went to an apartment complex where he had been staying and used a shovel to hit a construction worker in the head and back. They say Carnell left the worker in a trench while he broke into an apartment and tried to strangle a 36-year-old woman.
The woman’s daughter and her boyfriend interrupted the attack, and Carnell ran away, records say. They called 911 at 10:53 a.m.
After leaving the apartment, Carnell approached a 45-year-old man in a wheelchair, told the man he was coming with him and started pushing him down the street before tipping him over, police said.
Construction workers called 911 to report seeing Carnell break out windows on a house. Carnell was arrested at 11 a.m.
Officers are still trying to determine if Carnell was responsible for a bicyclist who was assaulted and left unconscious on a bike path near the park where the boy’s skateboard was taken, Deputy Police Chief Tracy Tracy Basterrechea said.
The bicyclist and the construction worker were taken to the hospital. The construction worker was listed in serious condition, Basterrechea said.
Carnell was believed to be under the influence of illegal narcotics at the time of the attacks, police said. More charges were expected to be filed.
