Faces 23 charges including rape, plotting to rape a minor, soliciting and buying sex

STOCKHOLM — A former police chief has gone on trial in Sweden on charges of rape and other sexual offenses.

Prosecutor Hakan Roswall says Goran Lindberg faces 23 charges, including rape, plotting to rape a minor, soliciting and buying sex.

Lindberg has acknowledged some cases of buying sex but has denied all other charges.

The case opened Tuesday in Sodertorns District Court in Stockholm. It has received wide attention in Sweden because Lindberg served as police commissioner in the city of Uppsala from 1997 to 2006. He also served as head of Sweden’s national police academy and has lectured on gender equality and sexual harassment.

Lindberg’s lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.
