All gangs adopt visual identifiers, whether they are colors, signs or symbols, to mark their affiliation. While graffiti, tattoos and clothing are the most typical mode of identification, intelligence officers at the Idaho DOC are finding that Sureño inmates are carrying around and displaying the number 9 playing card of various suits. It most likely represents something that starts with the letter “I” but it is a new symbol, and one to be watched.
A sergeant at SICI found a Web site that shows the gypsy meaning of the “9" card is:
9 Hearts
The friendship card. To “feel” for someone. The wish. This card is all about caring. It will tell you if your wish will comes true based on the card beneath or to the right of it.
9 Clubs
A card of deep worry. Sickness. Confusion & doubts. This card indicates an area were complete trust and loyalty is lacking. When touching a court card use caution in any communication. Other cards could point to a sickness of the individual as well.
9 Diamonds
The card of gifts. To be recognized and appreciated. This card is a catalyst for announcements which are described in the cards beside it.
Generally a good influence on it’s own. Small increase in money.
9 Spades
The card of negativity. In this we have an influence that is challenging. An illusion sometimes the person’s own imagination thinking the worst. This card cautions about miscommunications and a variety of mishaps.
Even though we may not know exactly what it means yet, that fact that the Sureños are using it as a symbol makes it gang related. You should make a C-Note entry whenever you find an inmate carrying it or displaying it. When we find out for sure its meaning I will let you all know. If you find out first, please keep us informed.
