Police arrested an Idaho Falls man Saturday for harassing neighbors and threatening an officer with a power saw.

Steven Glen Shelton, 38, was arrested for felony assault and battery of a police officer, and misdemeanor trespassing, disturbing the peace, malicious harassment ,and assault by verbal threats he made to his neighbors.

An officer responded to the call at 1071 Lovejoy St. at about 4 p.m. Saturday. A woman who was helping her sister with repairs said Shelton came onto their property and asked for help getting rid of the neighbors.

The police report said Shelton wanted to get rid of a black neighbor and was using racial slurs and profanity. The woman and her family members told Shelton to leave. He refused and threatened to kill them, the report said.

After interviewing the family, the officer went across the street to where Shelton had just pulled up in a pickup truck. He yelled at her to get off his property and threatened her.

The officer’s report said Shelton smelled of alcohol and clenched a cigarette in his teeth as he yelled. He picked up a handheld cordless power saw and turned it on, the report said.

Shelton spit on the officer and charged her, trying to punch her in the head with his fist, police said. The officer sidestepped Shelton and sprayed him in the face with pepper spray, according to the report.

Another officer arrived and helped handcuff Shelton, who continued to struggle. He was in the Bonneville County Jail on Monday.
