MINNEAPOLIS — Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, one of four cops charged in the caught-on-tape death of George Floyd, was released from custody Wednesday morning after posting bond, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.
The 44-year-old murder suspect was being held at a Minnesota correctional facility on $1 million bail, online records show. The amount comes with certain conditions, such as staying in Minnesota and surrendering his guns.
Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and third-degree manslaughter and had been in custody since May 31, just days after he was caught on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes as the unarmed Black man repeatedly begged for air.
The three other officers facing charges in the case — Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao — had already been released from jail.
