LEXINGTION, Ky. — Nicholasville police are investigating the theft of weapons and other equipment from a Lexington police officer’s unmarked vehicle on Autumn Hills Way.
Shortly after 4 a.m. Monday, police were called to a Nicholasville house where a Lexington officer lives. The officer told Nicholasville police that his unmarked vehicle was broken into and that some police equipment was stolen.
A family member had let the dogs out about 4 a.m. and saw two people in the SUV, Nicholasville police said in a news release. The family member yelled for the officer, and the two people ran off, carrying the equipment.
“We’re not releasing from our end what equipment was stolen,” Sgt. Scott Harvey, Nicholasville police spokesman, said. “Some of it was weapons.”
Because of policies regarding weapons and vehicles, a “routine internal review” is being conducted by the Lexington Police Department Public Integrity Unit, according to a Facebook post by Lexington police.
“Any violations or policy failures uncovered during this review will be corrected appropriately and as outlined by law,” according to the post.
The Nicholasville Police Department is handling the case, but Lexington police are “dedicating all necessary resources to this investigation to recover these stolen items,” according to the post.
A separate theft occurred Saturday in Jessamine County, when department-issued equipment was taken from the vehicle of a civilian employee of the Lexington Police Department, according to the post. It is unclear whether the thefts are related.
The Jessamine County Sheriff’s Department is investigating that theft.
