MONTREAL (CP) - A man who showed up at a clinic with the ends of his fingers blown off prompted a police search Sunday for homemade bombs in east Montreal.
The 25-year-old was injured while he and a 24-year-old friend played with the devices in a field on Sunday afternoon. Police roped off the area where they believed four to five unexploded bombs remained. No bombs were found in a search of the man’s truck.
On Sunday night, police searched the 25-year-old’s apartment where they believed the explosives were made.
Officers evacuated about 30 people from neighbouring buildings while they conducted the search.
Investigators said they did not believe the men intended to hurt anyone with the bombs.
“It doesn’t appear they had any criminal intent, or were out to harm anyone,” said police spokesman Const. Olivier Lapointe. “It seems they just wanted to set things off.”
Lapointe described the bombs as “very unstable, very dangerous.”
Police still aren’t sure where the men learned to make the bombs.
“We don’t know yet, but it’s not hard,” Lapointe said. “The information is out there. It’s easy.”
