HOUSTON — One of Houston’s top police dogs was euthanized Wednesday morning after he was injured in a chase where he still caught the suspect.
“The dog went out the way that he wanted to go out,” Houston Police Department Chief Art Acevedo said.
Police began pursuing a stolen vehicle around 1 a.m. Wednesday. The suspect ran into a police car at some point in the chase, and the pursuit ended near 12700 River Trail, in northeast Harris County.
A K-9 unit started running after the suspect in a heavily wooded area and his leg got stuck in a log or some other wooden object, Acevedo said. He was seriously injured and had to be euthanized.

The dog, named Rony, has been with the Houston Police Department for seven years, and he’s made 250 captures, Acevedo said.
“This dog is probably our best dog,” he said.
The person who tried to evade police is in custody now, and charges could be filed later this morning.
“Thanks to Rony and his last act, we flushed him out,” Acevedo said.
