FORT PIERCE, Fla.- The city’s longtime police chief was indicted on felony charges of forging his ex-wife’s signature on a $5,800 real estate check and taking the money.
Eugene Savage, 57, was indicted Wednesday after a grand jury heard testimony about the check. It had been signed with the name of Savage’s former wife, Gwendolyn Boyd, herself a police chief in another Florida city.
Savage was indicted on charges of grand theft, bank check forgery and uttering a forged bill and was released on $3,000 bond. He has been chief in this Atlantic coast city of 38,000 since 1997 and was placed on unpaid administrative leave.
He declined to comment Thursday.
Boyd, who works 100 miles away in North Miami, also declined to comment as she left the courthouse.
Savage has no criminal history and the charges are not connected to his job, prosecutor Lev Evans said.
