TOKYO — A vicious and bizarre subway attack in Tokyo left 17 people injured on Sunday. According to The Guardian, a man dressed as the Joker from the Batman movies went on a stabbing spree in a train car packed with Halloween revelers.
The suspect, 24-year-old Kyota Hattori, also used lighter fluid to set a train car on fire.
Video shared widely on social media shows frantic passengers fleeing to an adjoining train car. Flames and smoke can be seen billowing out of the far train car. Another video shows passengers squeezing out of the train’s windows onto a subway platform.
Japanese police said Hattori admitted he wanted to kill multiple people and receive the death penalty, according to the report. Hattori also told police that he adores the Joker character. A government spokesperson described the incident as “atrocious and brutal.”
One man was in critical condition after being stabbed in the chest, while 16 others suffered minor injuries, including smoke inhalation, reports The Guardian.
