Duty Death: Charles Salaway - [Saratoga County]

NEW YORK — A retired state trooper with local ties has died from cancer caused by exposure to the noxious fumes from the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office said.
State Police Sgt. Charles Salaway, 55, died Saturday.
“The men and women of the Saratoga County Sheriffs Office offer our condolences to all of his family and friends which include his wife Saratoga County Sheriff’s Investigator Courtney Salaway and his son Saratoga County Deputy Sheriff Carson Salaway,” the sheriff’s office said.
State Police said Salaway, 55, was assigned to New York City to work on the search and recovery effort at the World Trade Center. A number of rescuers have been sickened and others have died from exposure to the chemicals that burned at the site for months after the twin towers were attacked.
The deaths of police and firefighters have been attributed to the toxins for yeasr.
Salaway is the seventh trooper to die from a 9/11-related illness.
On Jan. 2, Trooper Michael J. Anson died. He also worked the search-and-recovery effort at ground zero in the days after the terror attacks.
Suffering from medical complications, Salaway retired in October, State Police said. He was most recently assigned to the trooper’ barracks in Wilton.
Salaway joined the State Police on Oct. 1, 1990.
State Police said Salaway’s funeral is still being planned.
