BOSTON, Mass. — A Boston police officer was shot in the arm and a man was killed this afternoon after cops and two men exchanged gunfire on Westville Street in Dorchester, authorities said.

Two officers were speaking to two men on Geneva Avenue at about 1:05 p.m. when one of the men pushed one of the officers and then opened fire, said acting Boston Police Commissioner William Evans. The gunman continued shooting as he ran around the corner to Westville Street. The officers chased after the suspect, returned fire and he was killed, Evans said.

“When you have a situation of deadly force and they’re trying to kill us, we have no other choice unfortunately,” Evans said at a press conference near the scene. “That’s what we’re trained for. If someone opens fire on us, we have obviously every right to fire back.”
