RANDOLPH, N.J. — A fire at police headquarters caused significant water and smoke damage to an office where it sparked Saturday morning.
NJ.com reported that officers discovered the fire in the department’s support services division office around 8 a.m. and quickly tried unsuccessfully to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher. The office’s sprinkler system also activated.
Authorities evacuated the police department and the Randolph Township Fire Department later contained the flames and helped clear heavy smoke from the complex.
Though equipment and the office were damaged, police said the fire didn’t impact operational aspects of the department’s patrol division, according to the report. They also said there and there would be no interruption in service to residents.
An office next to where the fire started also had water damage, authorities said.
“The township and the police department have already taken significant steps in cleaning up the damage and relocating the officers in the office,” a news release said.
Officials said the fire was apparently electrical and no foul play was suspected.
