An emergency situation may require removing an injured deputy from the “kill zone”. A fully equipped deputy sheriff could weigh as much as 200 pounds or more. With this in mind, the following carrying technique should be considered:
1. Raise the deputy to a standing position.
2. Grasp the deputy’s wrist and lift his arm over his head while continuing to support the deputy with your other arm.
CAUTION: If the deputy has an injured arm, grasp the wrist of the uninjured arm.
3. Bend at the waist and kneel, pulling the deputy over your shoulder. At the same time, slip your arm from his waist, pass the arm between the deputy’s legs, and grasp behind the deputy’s knee.
If properly applied the “Fireman’s Carry” may enable you to carry far more weight than thought possible.
