CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Authorities say a lawyer in the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office fired shots at police during a standoff in a Charleston home and was taken into custody covered in blood.

Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster says Mark Bramble fired several shots inside a home before his arrest Monday. Webster says all of Bramble’s wounds were apparently self-inflicted and he underwent surgery.

Webster says one officer returned fire Monday but he wasn’t sure if Bramble was hit. He adds no officers were wounded.

Attorney General Patrick Morrisey says Bramble was employed in the office’s workers compensation division for the past year and had turned in his resignation notice Thursday. It was effective late this month.

Bramble’s wife left the home uninjured.

There was no immediate word what caused the standoff.
