MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee police detective is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was shot Thursday while trying to stop a robbery.

According to FOX 6, the detective was off duty when a suspect tried to rob a woman right in front of him. The detective, who was identified only as a 37-year-old male, tried to intervene. That’s when the suspect took out a gun and fired, striking the detective multiple times, police said. The detective returned fire as the suspect ran away, although it’s not clear if he hit anyone. An 18-year-old and a 17-year-old were taken into custody after a short pursuit, according to the report.

Police said the detective suffered life-threatening injuries but is in stable condition, FOX 6 reported.

“Again, I want to remind everyone, this was an off-duty detective, probably just ordering food,” Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman told reporters. “He went into danger without even hesitation. Absolutely proud of the men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department; proud that we are able to be professional on and off duty.”
