Segment One: Apple is taking on the FBI, refusing to write any new version of its iOS that would allow the agency to get into the phone used by Syed Farook, one of the terrorists who killed 14 people and wounded 22 others in San Bernardino last year. Many are criticizing the tech giant as being unpatriotic, but as Benjamin Franklin famously wrote, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” That was true in 1755 and it remains true today. Jim and Doug discuss the issue, and predict what will happen next.

Segment Two: The subject shouts, “Come on, pigs, kill me! I don’t give a damn! Come on! What are you waiting for? Shoot!” and begins raising the gun at his side and pointing toward the officers who had responded to a man-with-a-gun call. The cops are forced to fire. The subject is declared dead at the scene. In a suicide note found in a pocket, the man apologies to his daughter and tells her where the key to the safety-deposit box is. Jim and Doug discuss issues related to suicide by cop, from recognizing the warning signs that’s what you’re dealing with to dealing with the psychological aftermath. For more on the former, check out this article, and for more on the latter, check out this one.

Segment Three: Conducting a traffic stop entails a good amount of forethought. Officers have to be tactical about the location of the stop, and calling in the stop to dispatch. Another consideration is whether you are going to use a passenger-side approach. A good tactical tip also is to note what’s happening with the tail lights. The right turn signal still blinking could be an indicator that the driver is thinking so hard about what he’s going to do next that he forgot to turn it off. The brake lights remaining on may indicate the driver is going to slam it into drive and take off. Jim and Doug offer some safety reminders.
