BENSALEM, Pa. — Officers were in the middle of recapturing an escaped inmate Tuesday when the inmate pulled a knife and stabbed one of the officers in the abdomen.
NBC News reports that Matthew Miller escaped from his Bucks County Prison work release program in Doylestown and spotted by police an hour later.
Officer Michael Jachimski was the first to respond and was stabbed by Miller. The brunt of the stab was taken by Jachimski’s bulletproof vest and he was uninjured. He attempted to stun Miller, but the inmate jumped into the officer’s cruiser and took off.
A short time later, the inmate ditched the vehicle and continued running on foot.
He was apprehended two miles away from the stabbing on a playground near an elementary school. Officers have recovered both the vehicle as well as the knife used in the assault.
Miller has been charged with attempted murder as well as other charges. Officer Jachimski is in good spirits and is expected to return to work soon.
