As cops, we all perform seemingly mudane and routine tasks during the course of our daily and nightly duties. If you work alone in a small jurisdiction like I do, sometimes it’s easy to get complacent when patrolling the same boring areas with little or no activity. During these times I’ve learned to focus my thoughts on when/then scenarios. On the outside it may look like I’m just doing a routine foot patrol, but on the inside I’m challenging myself with high-risk mental scenarios (e.g., active shooter, hostage, multiple assailants against single officer, etc.). This not only helps to make an otherwise mundane shift more enjoyable, but it has definitely helped to make me better prepared when the stuff has hit the fan.
