ABILENE, Texas A man who Abilene police say threatened officers with a number of weapons during a January incident was indicted Thursday on a charge of aggravated assault of a public servant.
Larry Dale Smith, 46, was arrested Jan. 17 after police arrived at his home in the 2600 block of Russell Avenue to arrest him on three outstanding warrants.
According to Reporter-News archives, the Abilene Police Department reported that Smith saw the officers approaching and ran inside his house, where he threatened them with a large kitchen knife.
Officers said that after they wrestled the knife away from him, he ran outside and drew a handgun from the waistband of his pants. An officer used a Taser to subdue Smith, who was then booked into the Taylor County Jail. He was released March 4 after posting bond.
Aggravated assault of a public servant is a firstdegree felony, punishable by up to 99 years in prison and an optional $10,000 fine.
Smith also was indicted on a charge of bond jumping, which could potentially carry up to one year in a county jail and a $4,000 fine.
The grand jury also indicted John Barbee, 30, on two counts of assault of a public servant stemming from a December arrest.
Four people were indicted on a charge of possession of methamphetamine, and one on a charge of possession of marijuana.
