EDGEWATER, Fla. — Edgewater police shot and killed a man who was chasing and shooting at his wife in front of them, according to a release from Edgewater Police spokesman Joe Mahoney.
Gary Johns, 65, was killed Monday evening after police responded to a report of a shooting, Mahoney said.
When officers arrived at 2944 Unity Tree Drive they heard a gunshot, Mahoney said, and Johns, armed with a handgun, chased a screaming woman out of the residence, shooting at her. Officers ordered the man to drop the gun and the man refused, Mahoney said.
“Two of the officers on scene discharged their firearm striking the male subject,” Mahoney said. “The female ran to an officer and informed him she had been shot in the chest.”
The woman was identified as his wife, Karen, 58.
Both people were transported to Halifax Hospital where Gary Johns was pronounced deceased, Mahoney said. Karen Johns’ injuries were described as non-life threatening.
The officers involved are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
