OAKLAND- A suspected burglar was shot by a police officer Monday morning inside an East Oakland church he had broken into, investigators said.
The 46-year-old suspect was in critical condition at a local hospital.
The officer who shot him was not hurt.
Investigators were waiting to talk to both the suspect and the officer.
Police would not provide additional details pending further investigation, including the question of whether the suspect had a weapon.
The shooting happened about 4:37 a.m. inside the Koinonia Apostolic Church, 9429 MacArthur Blvd. Police responded to a loud alarm and saw that a side door had been forced open.
The shooting happened after an officer found the suspect inside.
Police said the suspect had some items belonging to the church ready to be removed from the building.
It was not immediately known if the church had been burglarized before. Besides the alarm, there are bars on the front windows.
The shooting is being investigated by the homicide unit, which handles all officer-involved shootings whether fatal or not, and the Internal Affairs Division.
