PITTSBURGH — Several elected officials have joined protesters’ calls for charges against the officer in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Antwon Rose.
Hundreds continued to protest on Tuesday and blocked off several intersections a week after Rose was fatally shot by East Pittsburgh Officer Michael Rosfeld, CBS Pittsburgh reported. The protesters reached the City-Council Building, where several elected officials joined their calls for charges against Rosfeld.
“I’m appalled at what I saw on the video. We’ve already from our official capacity called for the DA to press charges on this individual,” Rep. Jake Wheatley said.
Rep. Ed Gainey and Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner also called for charges against Rosfeld.
“As we stand here as a community to say that we will absolutely not stand for this and as a community we absolutely support the need to file charges,” Wagner said.
On June 19, Rose was fatally shot while running from East Pittsburgh police after he and two others were pulled over in a car believed to be involved in an earlier shooting. The shooting was captured on a bystander’s cellphone video, which sparked public outcry.
Protests have erupted almost daily since the fatal shooting. In preparations for continued protests, the Pittsburgh Police Department said all officers in the department will work 12-hour shifts starting Tuesday, according to ABC News.
Rosfeld has been placed on administrative leave, per policy, pending the results of an internal investigation, according to the Associated Press. He said while he couldn’t discuss the shooting, he has received a lot of support from law enforcement.
