Fla. officer, suspect hit in shootout

LAKELAND, Fla. — A police officer was shot and a suspect was shot multiple times in an exchange of gunfire during an arrest attempt Tuesday.

According to The Ledger, Sgt. Jeff Gary and Officer Doug Mills responded to the area to arrest a wanted man when the incident occurred.

Both officers approached the subject, who then opened fire. Officer Mills was hit once in the right arm.

The officers returned fire, and the suspect was hit multiple times.

Both Officer Mills and the suspect, who has yet to be identified, were transported to the hospital. Officer Mills is now listed in good condition. The suspect is critical.

Police found four firearms on the suspect, according to the report. The man was wanted on a charge of resisting an officer without violence.

Officer Mills is a motorcycle officer with the Lakeland Police Department. He joined the force in 2008.
