BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A man who brandished a knife and threatened people Monday at downtown Bakersfield’s Amtrak station was shot and killed by a detective, police say.
The shooting took place about shortly after 9:30 a.m. after police received reports of a man threatening and charging at employees at the station just south of Truxtun Avenue and east of Rabobank Arena, Sgt. Gary Carruesco said.
The detective, who has not yet been named, arrived at the station and confronted the man, who continued moving toward him while armed with the knife. The man ignored repeated commands to stop moving toward the detective, Carruesco said.
The detective then fired and struck the man, who died at the scene. A knife was recovered.
Carruesco said there were witnesses to the shooting, which occurred just north of the station’s row of parked buses. Those people are being interviewed, and Carruesco said police are trying to determine if the incident was captured on video.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111.
