LEGRANGE, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved LaGrange shooting in which a Troup County deputy reportedly wounded an armed 60-year-old man June 29, according a release.
Terry Lee Caldwell, the alleged gunman, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with what appears to be two non-life threatening gunshot wounds — one to the elbow and another to the thigh. His current condition was not immediately released.
The deputy was not harmed, GBI officials said.
The Troup County Sheriff’s Office said they received a 12:05 a.m. call from a resident who reported that their neighbor was shooting a gun.
Deputy Stephen D’Angelo responded to 3200 block of Hamilton Road and found Caldwell sitting in his carport, according to the release.
Officials said Caldwell had an AK47-style pistol, which he reportedly fired twice at the deputy. D’Angelo allegedly shot at the man four times and struck him twice, officials said.
GBI officials said they will conduct a thorough investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the district attorney for any action he deems appropriate, according to the release.
The Troup County Sheriff’s Office plans to charge Caldwell with one count each of aggravated assault on a peace officer and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime after the suspect has been released from the hospital, Sgt. Stewart Smith said.
