EL PASO, Texas — An El Paso police motorcyle officer died today after a car hit him during a funeral procession at Yarbrough Drive and Edgemere Boulevard, officials said.
The name of the officer was not released, but a police spokesman said he had been with the department for 10 years.
Officials said the officer, one of two motorcycle officers working the funeral procession, died at a hospital.
Police said the officer was struck about 2 p.m.
Officials said one of the motorcycle officers had stopped traffic at the intersection when a woman disregarded the officer and struck the victim.
Police blocked off the area and officials said the intersection will be blocked off while the investigation is completed.
Police did not release the name of the driver of the car.
The other officer was not injured, police said.
Officers who work funeral processions are working off duty for funeral homes.
The last officer to die on duty was Angel Garcia, 27, who died Dec. 16, 2012. He was hit on Interstate 10 while removing a ladder from the roadway.
