CHINO VALLEY, Ariz. — A man was fatally shot by officers after he opened fire on them during a traffic stop.
Police attempted to pull over Martin L. Avena on July 21 after he was involved in a domestic violence incident that put his wife in the hospital, the Daily Courier reported. Initially, Avena fled but came to a stop and displayed a rifle.
Deputy Theresa Kennedy and Officer Jeffrey Pizzi told Avena, 70, to drop his weapon and show his hands, but he refused. Kennedy fired five times and Avena returned fire.
Fifteen more shots can be heard in the video. Kennedy asks if Pizzi is OK before noticing Avena’s gun is on the ground.
The officers are then seen taking cover until backup arrives. Avena was taken to the hospital where he died on July 24.
An investigation is ongoing.
