PHOENIX — The Senate has passed a ban on photo radar along state highways that would only affect two cities.
The Legislature has failed in recent years to ban photo radar statewide, so Sen. Debbie Lesko of Peoria introduced a measure to ban the cameras along state highways.
Her measure would only affect speed cameras in the communities of El Mirage and Star Valley. Lesko said her legislation is narrow in focus to increase the odds of it becoming law.
The Arizona League of Cities and Towns opposes the measure, saying the cameras slow down drivers in areas where police cannot safely pull them over.
The Senate passed Senate Bill 1241 on a 16-12 vote Monday. The measure now moves to the House.
