OVIEDO, Fla. — An SUV hit an Oviedo motorcycle police officer Wednesday morning in Oviedo, breaking his hand, but the officer was released from the hospital later, police said.
Officer William Barrett, 35, a three-year department veteran, was flown by helicopter from the scene of the crash, State Road 419 and Lockwood Boulevard.
A woman driving a sport utility vehicle and traveling in the opposite direction on Lockwood Boulevard turned left in front of Barrett, who was riding his department Harley-Davidson en route to another traffic accident, Oviedo police Lt. Dennis Lynch said.
The SUV driver was ticketed for making an improper left turn, Lynch said.
The crash happened shortly after 9 a.m. Barrett suffered a broken hand, concussion, cuts to his face and complained of back pain, Lynch said. Barrett was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center and was released later in the day.
Lynch said Barrett probably would miss several weeks of work.
