Police arrested a suspect in a string of Valentine’s Day robberies Friday after a 10-hour standoff near Madison’s south side.

Town of Madison police arrested Anthony Chancy, 36, after getting a “negotiator phone” to him around midday, Lt. Wayne Stolpa said. Police had considered him armed and dangerous.

Police started gathering at an apartment building in the 300 block of Coyier Lane at about 3 a.m. Friday after town of Madison officers received information that Chancy was staying with a woman at an apartment there. The woman remained in the apartment until about an hour before Chancy surrendered shortly after 1 p.m.

The town called in the Dane County Tactical Team shortly after getting the information about Chancy’s whereabouts. City of Madison officers also provided support. In all, Stolpa said 50 officers participated in the arrest.

Officer evacuated the remaining residents of the building, which Stolpa said housed about 10 apartments.

The tactical squad positioned itself near the apartment, and officers closed portions of Badger Lane and Coyier Lane to traffic, impeding some in their attempts to get to work at nearby businesses.

Police had been on the lookout for Chancy in connection with a series of robberies on Feb. 14 that included a BP gas station on East Washington Avenue, an Open Pantry on the Beltline, a Clark station on South Park Street and a Citgo station on North Sherman Avenue.
