GRAHAM, N.C. — Officers in North Carolina recently arrested a man involved in an intense pursuit that ended with the suspect’s vehicle diving head-first into a family’s garage.

According to FOX 8 News, 23-year-old Xavier Juwan Atwater-Smith ran a red light, nearly swiping an officer’s patrol unit with his car. After the stunt, Atwater-Smith continued driving and police began to pursue him.

To stop the suspect, one Alamance County deputy attempted to block Atwater-Smith’s vehicle in, but the suspect managed to elude police by ramming the deputy’s vehicle. The officer got out of the patrol car in pursuit of Atwater-Smith, but the offender instead placed his car in reverse, running over the deputy’s foot.

FOX 8 News reports that the suspect lost control of the vehicle. At this point, video captures his car sailing down a steep hill in a neighborhood and catapulting several feet in the air before plunging into a garage. Officers were able to subdue him after the crash.

The individuals in the home, who were about 30 feet away from the crash, were unharmed by the collision. The deputy who was hit by the suspect was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

FOX 8 reported Atwater-Smith was initially hospitalized for serious injuries, but after his recent release, authorities charged him with reckless driving to endanger, injury to real property, two counts of injury to personal property and felony fleeing to elude.
