How many of you have stopped a subject for a traffic violation and suspected there may be narcotics in the vehicle? Upon closer inspection through plain view, there are several indicators of narcotics, but not enough PC to investigate further.
Maybe you’re thinking, “I wonder if there is anything of interest in that glove box?”
Well I’m here to offer a simple but effective tip/tool I use for these sorts of traffic stops.
It’s a simple question I’ve learned over time (with some trial and error) that your subject is almost obligated mentally to open the glove box so you can view its contents.
Just ask, “Mam/Sir, do you think you have any additional registration documents inside the glove box that I can take a look at?”
Now, at this point one of two things will happen. Either they’re a person experienced with law enforcement contact and will flat out say no, or they’ll gladly open it and fumble around.
I’ve found the latter to be truer than the former.
While presenting this question, it’s important to point at the glove box as it presents a visual cue to open it.
Sure enough, before you know it that bad boy will be popped open for your viewing pleasure.
I’m not saying it always works, but I’d be comfortable saying 9/10 times it has proven to be effective.
Stays safe out there and keep your head on a swivel.
