SHARON, N.Y. (AP) - Police shot and killed a 44-year-old man Monday after a bank robbery in an Albany suburb, a car chase and a crash, according to authorities.

John Clune of Oneonta was taken to Bassett Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:11 a.m., State Police said. He was identified as an underwiter with New York Central Mutual Insurance Co.

The Capital Bank and Trust Co. in Colonie was robbed shortly after 9 a.m. Monday, and witnesses said the robber left in a green van. Troopers said the vehicle was spotted about 40 minutes later on Interstate 88 in Cobleskill.

State Police and Schoharie County sheriff’s deputies chased the van on the highway and rural roads for about 20 minutes. Police said the chase ended when the van hit a deputy’s car in Sharon, 38 miles west of Albany.

Clune ignored shouted warnings to freeze and put his hands up, appeared to be reaching for an object, and two troopers and a deputy fired shots, State Police said. Clune reportedly threw a bag containing money and a toy gun from the van during the chase.
