MERIDIAN, Miss. — A corrections officer was allegedly shot and killed by a colleague in a parking lot at East Mississippi Correctional Facility, WTOK reports.
Two corrections officers who worked at the facility got into an altercation in the parking lot, leading to one officer firing a gun, killing an officer, Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun told WTOK.
“We are heartbroken to report a tragic and fatal altercation that occurred between two correctional officers at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility,” a prison spokesperson said in a statement provided to WTOK.
Officers at the prison immediately responded to the parking lot after hearing a gunshot and took the suspect into custody, a prison official said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Calhoun said both officers were on duty at the time of the shooting.
