A correctional officer collapsed and died Sunday while escorting an inmate at a facility in Carlisle.

Wabash Valley Correctional Officer Timothy Betts, 51, suffered a fatal heart attack while moving an “unruly inmate” into segregation, The Officer Down Memorial Page reported. Other officers at the prison assisted Betts when he collapsed, administering CPR and an automated external defibrillator until ambulances arrived to take him to Sullivan County Community Hospital.

Betts passed away a short time later. He had worked at the Carlisle facility since 1997 and had been recognized for outstanding service, according to a news release.

“Tim Betts was a consummate professional and a true role model,” Superintendent Richard Brown said in the release. “His co-workers knew they could depend on him, that Tim would cover their back if anything happened.”
