P1 Poll results: How do you choose concealed/off-duty firearms?

We asked our our P1 audience about their purchasing habits when it comes to off-duty/concealable firearms

We recently polled our Police1 audience to uncover some of the trends and purchasing habits of cops when it comes to off-duty/concealable firearms.

1. How old is your primary concealed/off-duty firearm?

Of those we polled, nearly 45 percent said their primary off-duty firearm is 1-5 years old. Another 29 percent said theirs is over 5 years old. Nearly 10 percent just recently made a new purchase.

2. How often do you purchase concealed/off-duty firearms?

The results were almost tied between two answers pertaining to how often cops purchase firearms for off-duty purposes. The 1-5 year range was the most popular answer, with 40 percent of the vote. 5 years or more was a close second, with 37 percent of the vote.

3. What are the key features you look for in concealed/off-duty firearms?

Here were the most common responses for what cops look for when choosing off-duty guns:

  • Weight (Lighter the better)
  • Magazine Capacity
  • Ability to be concealed
  • Comfort
  • Caliber/Stopping power
  • Similarity/Compatibility with on-duty weapon

4. What is your budget for concealed/off-duty firearms?

According to our poll results, most cops (63 percent) keep their off-duty firearm budget between $400-$700 dollars.

5. Do you plan on purchasing concealed/off-duty firearms in the next...

Nearly 40 percent of our poll-takers plan to purchase a new off-duty firearm in the next five years. Almost the same amount (35.75 percent) plan to within a year. But, as with any major purchase, some run into roadblocks...

6. What are the roadblocks keeping you from purchasing the product?

These were the most common answers for why cops have held off on making a new purchase:

  • Lack of available funds/cost/budget
  • Satisfaction with current setup
  • Departmental restrictions
  • Significant other
