DynaSystems LLC’s ‘DynaSpike’ was created to solve an important problem in law enforcement: safely deploying spike strips during vehicle pursuits. For Dynasystems President Eric Spencer, the challenge is a personal one; his brother is a police officer, and listed the tactic as the ‘scariest part of the job’. What was the inspiration behind starting your company?
My brother is a police officer in upstate New York and he once told me the scariest part of his job is standing along the road and throwing a spike strip into the path of a fleeing vehicle. I never knew how dangerous using spike strips was until he told me how they are used. I started to research the use of spike strips and was horrified to discover that at least 21 police officers have been killed deploying a spike strip. As an engineer, I knew there had to be a better solution, so after several design iterations, we developed the DynaSpike, which opens and closes a spike strip into the path of a fleeing vehicle using a wireless remote control. Now the police officer can stand at a safe location and deploy a spike strip to end a high speed chase.
Why do you believe your products are essential to the Police community?
The most important factor of any product used by law enforcement is safety; safety to the police officer and safety to the general public. The DynaSpike technology keeps the police officer out of harm’s way and protects the public by quickly ending a high speed chase.
What do your customers like best about you and your products?
Our customers love both the improved safety aspects of the DynaSpike remote control spike strip technology and the element of surprise the DynaSpike provides. Fleeing drivers have no way of knowing when or where the DynaSpike will be deployed since it can be placed along the road with nothing standing near it to give it away.
What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder community?
Knowing that more police officers will be able to go home safely after their shift.
What’s next for your company? Any upcoming new projects or initiatives?
We will be launching a line of video recorders that will revolutionize the Law Enforcement market. Technology has come a long way in this area and the Law Enforcement community has been missing out on some pretty revolutionary products that will reduce cost and increase video surveillance capabilities.
