Charges stand in case of activist charged with killing deputy, Atlanta

March 28, 2001
(ATLANTA) – A judge in Atlanta refuses to dismiss the charge that Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin killed a sheriff’s deputy, finding no proof of a conspiracy to frame the activist formerly known as H. Rap Brown.

Al-Amin was arrested a few days after the shooting last year in Alabama. Investigators say they found guns nearby that tie him to the killing.

During a hearing Tuesday, a police officer acknowledged that he gave misleading information in an affidavit for a warrant to search Al-Amin’s store for bloody clothing. Al-Amin’s lawyers suggest that investigators changed their version of events to match the discovery that he had not been wounded in a shoot-out with Fulton County deputies. The officer said he had been told that blood was found near the scene.

Al-Amin’s trial is scheduled to begin in September.
