Man Tries To Run Down Police With Backhoe In Mich.

MENOMINEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A man who authorities say was intoxicated tried to run over state troopers with a backhoe early Saturday and was arrested following a short standoff with police.

Troopers tried to stop a vehicle in Menominee County when the driver fled, turned off the vehicle’s headlights and turned down another road, police said. The vehicle then pulled into a private driveway and struck a parked car.

The driver fled on foot and while police were waiting for backup they were confronted by a man who claimed to own the land. Police said the man became belligerent, got on a backhoe and tried to run them over.

While trying to hit the troopers, who were on foot, the backhoe struck a parked vehicle that troopers tried to use to provide cover. Following a short standoff, police said the man was arrested.

The man, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was being held pending formal charges. Police weren’t sure whether the man with the backhoe was the same person who fled during the traffic stop, but said he was the only person arrested.

Menominee Township is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula along the state’s border with Wisconsin.
