BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) - A 23-year-old Staples man wanted in the armed robbery of a Motley family was shot by police and wounded on Monday after a pursuit across Cass and Wadena counties.
An officer fired after the suspect drove onto a field near Highway 64 in Cass County and exited a pickup truck holding a gun, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said, according to a report in Tuesday’s edition of the Brainerd Dispatch.
“He suffered at least one gunshot wound,” said Cass County Sheriff Randy Fisher.
Fisher declined to identify the officer because the incident was still being investigated. It was not clear which department the officer was from, as several law enforcement agencies were involved. No officers were injured, Fisher said.
The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Monday, about 45 minutes after the chase began.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd. His condition was not known early Tuesday.
According to the Morrison County Sheriff’s Department, the man is suspected of entering a home in Motley on Friday and robbing a family at gunpoint. The couple and their young daughter were tied up in the laundry room during the incident.
The suspect stole $26 in cash, jewelry and the couple’s 1995 red Dodge Dakota pickup truck.
That truck was found abandoned in Alexandria, and another truck was reported stolen.
