NEW YORK (AP) -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited the police station that was home base to the officer who fatally shot a teenager in Brooklyn last week, reinforcing his position that the incident warranted close inspection.
“New Yorkers have great confidence in the job you do,” Bloomberg told officers at Police Service Area 3 in Bushwick Saturday. “The trust between the community and you is based upon understanding exactly what happened.”
He visited the station during the 7:30 a.m. roll call and spoke for about 20 minutes.
Only a day earlier, Bloomberg spoke at the funeral of Timothy Stansbury Jr., the slain teenager. Stansbury, 19, was unarmed when he was shot Jan. 24 by Officer Richard Neri during a routine patrol of the Louis Armstrong Houses in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has said there was “no justification” for the shooting. A grand jury began investigating the incident Friday.
