CHAPEL HILL — A Chapel Hill police officer was placed on routine administrative leave after accidentally shooting a co-worker in the foot during training in Fayetteville on Wednesday, according to a police department news release.
Sgt. Donald Rhoads was unloading his rifle at 4:05 p.m. when it discharged, hitting Sgt. Andrew Smith’s left foot.
Smith is being treated at UNC Hospitals. His injury is not life-threatening, said a police spokeswoman, Jane Cousins.
The men were among 15 participants in an emergency response team training session Wednesday run by the Fayetteville Police Department, Capt. Chris Blue of the Chapel Hill police told The Associated Press.
