New York (AP) -- A robbery suspect died after being shot by transit police when he allegedly robbed and injured a man in a Manhattan subway station Sunday.

A 66-year-old man told a transit sergeant and an officer, both uniformed, that he had been robbed at the station at Chambers and Church streets, police said. The man, who was bleeding, said the robber struck him in the head with a metal object.

The officers chased the suspect into the No. 3 subway station at Chambers and West Broadway. The suspect ran about 15 feet into the southbound tunnel before the police confronted him.

One round was fired, striking the suspect, who then was taken to New York University Downtown hospital, police said. He later died of a gunshot wound to the torso.

The two officers were treated at a hospital for trauma, said Detective Noel Waters, a police department spokesman.

An investigation into the shooting was ongoing, police said.
