BOSTON, Mass. -- James J. “Shamus” Horgan Jr. of Roslindale, a retired state police officer and former capitol and Boston police officer, died Wednesday after a lenghty illness. He was 64.
Born and raised in Jamaica Plain, Mr. Horgan lived briefly in Dorchester before moving to Roslindale, where he resided for the past 33 years. He graduated from Mission High School and from Suffolk University.
Mr. Horgan served in the Air Force for four years and was stationed in Germany.
He was a Boston police officer before transferring to the Capitol Police Department, where he was assigned to duty at the State House. Mr. Horgan was a Massachusetts state trooper for the last few years of his law enforcement career.
He was past commander and member of State Police Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed working with the youth of the Roslindale area and was a coach for Parkway Youth Soccer and Roslindale-Parkway Youth Hockey.
He was an active member of Blind Veterans’ Association in recent years, serving as a delegate to the association’s yearly conventions.
Mr. Horgan is survived by his wife, Grace (Smith) of Roslindale; three sons, Stephen of Walpole, Andrew of Roslindale and Shawn of Roslindale; two sisters, Nancy Cooley of Roslindale and Carolyn Harty of Norwell; a brother, Richard of Dorchester; three grandchildren; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, Roslindale.
Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, West Roxbury.
