Parolee-at-Large Leads Police On Chase

KGTV-TV News, San Diego

A parolee-at-large led deputies on a brief but destructive North County road chase Tuesday, crashing a truck into squad cars and a utility pole before collapsing while trying to run away.

The wanted man began fleeing when he spotted patrol deputies near Community Road and Metate Lane in Poway shortly after 3 p.m., sheriff’s Lt. Guy Chambers said.

Several miles to the west, at Scripps Poway Parkway and Ivy Hill Drive in the Scripps Ranch district of San Diego, the suspect pulled over, purposely backed into the pursuing cruiser and sped off again, the lieutenant said.

A short distance away, he steered the Dodge truck into another sheriff’s vehicle, then crashed to a stop against a utility standard. At that point, he jumped out and bolted on foot.

His escape attempt ended moments later, however, when he fell to the ground, seemingly overcome by convulsions, Chambers said.

Deputies arrested him and took him to an emergency room, where he was treated and released back into the custody of sheriff’s personnel.

They then transported the suspect, whose name was not immediately available, to county jail for booking on suspicion of assault on peace officers, reckless driving, evading arrest and other charges, Chambers said.

The crashes caused no injuries, he added.
