Seattle police honored one of their own Thursday in a private ceremony at the East Precinct on Capitol Hill.

Officers gathered to remember Officer Elizabeth Nowak, 30, who was killed Monday when a man driving a stolen car slammed into her private vehicle. The officer had been en route to start her shift at the time of the early morning crash.

The man who killed Nowak, Neal Kelley, 35, was a felon with a lengthy history of auto theft and assaults. He also died in the crash.

Nowak was from Wisconsin, where her funeral is to be held. She recently joined the Seattle Police Department and was assigned to patrol in the East Precinct just five days before the fatal crash.
