LIVINGSTON, Calif. (AP) -- A man suspected of assaulting a California Highway Patrol officer during a traffic stop Tuesday was arrested later in the day at a convenience store.

Authorities say a CHP officer stopped Ronnie Bradford for speeding on Highway 99 near Livingston in Merced County on Tuesday morning.

The 22-year-old Merced man failed a field sobriety test, said CHP spokesman Michael Salas. As the officer attempted to arrest Bradford, the suspect allegedly assaulted her by punching and kicking her and then fled the scene, Salas said.

The officer, whose name was not released, suffered a broken nose and cuts to her head and was treated at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, Salas said.

After police received a tip, Bradford was arrested later in the day at a Turlock convenience store. He was later held at the Merced County Jail.
