U.S. Capitol Police to Start Mounted Unit

The Associated Press

Washington (AP) - Visitors to the U.S. Capitol could see more than officers on foot or in cars.

U.S. Capitol Police are to begin training a mounted unit this month.

Capitol Police Chief Terrence Gainer tells the Washington Post the horses will be sent out daily when Congress is in session. Gainer says they’ll be used in crowd control for demonstrations, and anti-crime and anti-terrorism patrols.

U.S. Park Police will train ten officers and two sergeants at its Rock Creek Park facility.

The start up costs will be about $375,000 dollars and the program will cost about $75,000 dollars a year
